The Fairly Living Creation Story

My mother, Grace, passed away in January of 2023 from breast cancer. Her death hit me hard. I was shocked, depressed, angry, and unable to function. I was not that close to my mother as a youngster. It was not until I had my first child that our relationship changed and we became close. My mother is from Guatemala, yet I related more to American ways than her Mayan-Spanish culture. After a few months of despair after losing her, I got up and decided to honor my mother and our culture. I was determined not to forget her or where she was from.  Fairly Living is the beginning of me finding myself and embracing my culture.

Guatemalan products are vibrant and eye-catching that embody the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of Guatemala.  These products are  handcrafted by skilled, but often impoverished, artisans, who depend on this added income to feed their families.  These traditional weaving techniques  have been passed down through generations.

The use of bright and contrasting colors is a hallmark of Guatemalan artisanship.  These colors are carefully chosen to create a visually stunning and harmonious composition.  It’s not uncommon to find a mix of vibrant blues, greens, yellows and purples, all skillfully woven together.

The materials used for these products can vary but often include sturdy and durable fabrics like cotton, leather and jute.  The weaving process is meticulous, resulting in a sturdy and reliable product.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they represent the country’s commitment to fair trade and sustainable business practices.  Many of these products are produced by cooperatives of local women artisans, providing them with a source of income and empowering them economically.

A Guatemalan product is not just practical; it’s a work of art that celebrates Guatemala’s culture, traditions, and commitment to fair trade.
